Jessy's Page

Jessica "Jessy" Wald has added much to the beauty of Temple Beth Israel's Friday evening and other services over the past two-plus years.

Following the occasion of Jessy turning 15 in December, 2008, Temple Beth Israel began honoring her with a page of her own on our Website!  Through this page, you can learn more about Jessy and also have a chance to watch her perform.

On December 20, 2008, the following article about Jessy appeared in the EL SENTINEL Spanish Edition of the Sun-Sentinel.

For readers fluent in Spanish, here is the link to that article:

And for readers most fluent in English, here is a translation of this article...

An Angelic Voice for Hanukkah & Shabbat

By María del Rosario Arreaza
SPECIAL by EL SENTINEL
20 December, 2008

It is not common in a synagogue to hear a female voice while a ceremony is being led by a rabbi. But the voice of Jessica Wald not only captured the attention of Rabbi Marcelo Bater of Temple Beth Israel in Plantation, but has become a tradition at the Temple’s Friday evening Kabbalat Shabbat services as well as at its High Holy Day and Shabbat Morning prayers.

Jessica, 14 years of age, has already been singing passionately for fun; and as a prayer-leader (Ba'alat-T'filah) in the synagogue located on the corner of Sunrise Blvd. & Nob Hill Rd. She says that she enjoys singing in a manner in which she describes as "flying in a spiritual world".

Jessica’s first religious experience was the day of her Bat-Mitzvah, a little less than two years ago in her native Argentina.

But it has been at Temple Beth Israel, the synagogue that she attends weekly, in which she has dedicated herself to what she likes most.

"I enjoy the responsibility of singing in the Temple every Friday" says Jessica. "Also I have had the challenge of singing various songs during the most important Jewish holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur", adds this young lady who aspires to finish her scholarly studies in order to prepare herself as a singer of opera and to become trained as a cantor.

The first experiences of Jessica as a Ba'alat T'filah were during the Latin services of Temple Torah in Tamarac at the side of Cantor Cesar Beleniski. And over the last year, in addition to her Temple Beth Israel in Plantation Jewish event participations, she’s also appeared as a singer of pop or lyrical music. In summary, Jessica’s voice is well known in Broward County. In fact, she has appeared in settings such as Wannado City, Weston Town Center, Riverfront in Fort Lauderdale, and Miramar Town Hall.

It is these types of presentations which give her the opportunity to sing so that others hear her voice and then invite her to perform at new events – both Jewish and non-religious ones.

"I delight in what I do, I feel proud when the people of my congregation tell me that they enjoy what I sing. And when I see tears in the eyes of my parents, I know that I am doing well", she says.

And as she still must travel a long road to become a professional cantor, her parents, Marcelo & Viviana, offer their support to her as much in the synagogue as in particular other events.

"We feel very proud and super touched upon seeing Jessica and hearing her sing", affirmed the two. And Viviana assumes that her daughter inherited her gift of singing from her paternal grandfather and an aunt "because we (her parents) don’t sing at all", she asserts.

On the other hand, Ariel, the younger brother of Jessica, can sing and he is preparing himself not only to sing for his Bar-Mitzvah in two years, but to sing a duet with his sister in the synagogue.

Although Jessica wishes to professionally sing and to continue her Ba'alat T'filah role in a synagogue, there is another objective in her life: to become a dentist.

Meanwhile, she continues to enjoy her adolescence in her Town of Weston; to prepare herself to celebrate Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, this Sunday evening (which also gives her a chance to try out new songs for presenting to her Temple Beth Israel congregation); and to, in general, enjoy the possibility of singing in public whenever she can.
